Groundbreaking took place May 4th on the new $13.8 million dollar Prichard Field. Completion is expected to be in September of 2012. On the table is the plan to make the stadium a joint use facility with the surrounding community. This will be a welcome benefit for the Killeen Independent School District (KISD). Currently there are four high schools. With land already purchased on the south side of town near the new police headquarters for a fifth school, KISD’s one football stadium, Leo Buckley, is not going to meet future needs. Currently games are played on Friday nights and either Saturday or Thursday. Two high schools are always at an away game. The district has provided its requirements in design to be able to use the facility. Public access will be through a new road that will not allow access to base itself. The new stadium will meet all the UIL requirements, offer a regulation football field, four baseball fields, soccer field, press box, seating for 5,000, parking for 1,000 vehicles, offer a permanent stage, concession stand, locker rooms, and 10 ft. wide bike path.
