Beware of homestead tax-exemption scams!

If you have a principal residence in Texas, you are qualified for the homestead exemption.  One of the many benefits of the exemption is that it reduces the taxable value of a home.  Applying for the homestead exemption is easy and free.

Unfortunately there are scammers out there that prey on a homeowners lack of familiarity with the homestead exemption.  They will start soliciting by the form of letters in the mail during the first few weeks of the new year. They will create an impression that they represent the official taxing authority and will help you file an exemption FOR A FEE.  As stated before, filing for the exemption does not require paying a fee so the offer will likely be a scam.

Texas state law requires that these companies stipulate that they are not a government agency, but that doesn’t stop some of them from trying to imply such.
