Purple Heart awards for physical, bleeding injuries are something everyone is familiar with. The gray areas of injuries that are not so evident have had some review lately by the Army and Marine Corps. Standards for brain injuries have been better defined. As the science and understanding of brain injuries evolves, so will the criteria and guidance for awards relating to such injuries evolve. The latest guidance states: A Purple Heart may be award even if a service member was not treated (current guideline) by a medical officer as long as a medical officer certifies that the service member would have received medical treatment by a medical officer if it were available. This guidance will affect mild brain injuries and concussive injuries which are often hard to determine.
